Odoo migration guide: upgrading to the latest version safely

Why staying on an old Odoo version gets expensive, and how to upgrade without disrupting your business.

By the INSABHI team8 min read

Odoo releases a new major version every year. Many companies implement once and then stay on the same version for years, until a missing feature, a security concern or an unsupported integration forces an urgent upgrade. Planned upgrades are far cheaper than forced ones.

Why upgrade at all?

What actually gets migrated

ComponentHow it is handled
Standard dataEnterprise customers can use Odoo’s upgrade service; Community users typically rely on the open-source OpenUpgrade project or custom scripts.
Custom modulesMust be ported by developers to the new version’s framework and APIs.
Third-party appsNeed compatible versions, or replacement if they are no longer maintained.
Reports & viewsChecked and adjusted for layout and template changes.

A safe upgrade process

  1. Audit all modules, customisations and integrations. Remove what is no longer used.
  2. Check new standard features that can replace custom code.
  3. Run a test migration on a copy of production data.
  4. Port and test custom modules on the migrated copy.
  5. User acceptance testing of key business flows by your team.
  6. Rehearse the cut-over, then perform the final migration during a quiet window.

How long does it take?

A lightly customised database can often be upgraded in a few weeks. Heavily customised systems with many integrations need more time for porting and testing. Jumping several versions at once adds complexity, which is another reason to upgrade regularly.

Every custom module you replace with a standard feature is one less thing to port in every future upgrade.
