India is one of the world’s largest sources of software engineering talent. Companies across the US, UK, Europe, the Middle East and Australia rely on Indian partners to build and maintain their systems. Yet many first-time buyers have had a bad experience. Here is how to get it right.
Why companies outsource to India
- Talent depth: a very large pool of engineers experienced in modern stacks and ERP platforms like Odoo.
- Cost efficiency: senior-level work at rates well below Western agency pricing.
- Time-zone leverage: overlapping hours for collaboration, plus work progressing while you sleep.
- English proficiency: business communication and documentation in English as standard.
Choose the right engagement model
| Model | Choose it when |
|---|---|
| Fixed price | The scope is clear and stable, such as a website, a defined ERP rollout or an MVP. |
| Dedicated team | You have ongoing work and want developers who learn your product deeply. |
| Time & material | Requirements will evolve and you want flexibility over a fixed scope. |
Red flags to watch for
- Estimates given without asking detailed questions.
- No named project manager or single point of contact.
- Reluctance to give you access to code repositories.
- Large upfront payments with no milestones.
- No references or portfolio you can verify.
Set the partnership up for success
Protect yourself contractually
Sign an NDA before sharing details. Make sure the contract assigns all IP and source code to you, and tie payments to accepted milestones.
Agree how you will communicate
Fix the overlap hours, the tools (Slack, Teams, Jira), the reporting cadence and who attends sprint demos. Most offshore problems are communication problems.
Start small
A paid discovery phase or a small first project lets both sides test the relationship before you commit to something larger.
Insist on visibility
You should be able to see the task board, the code and the staging environment at any time. Transparency is the best quality control.
The cheapest quote is rarely the lowest cost. Choose the partner who asks the best questions.
