Whether you run Odoo, SAP Business One, Dynamics, NetSuite or a custom system, an ERP that slows down as data grows is one of the most common complaints we hear. The causes are usually fixable once they are measured.
The usual suspects
- Missing database indexes on fields used in searches and filters.
- Inefficient custom code, such as queries inside loops (the classic N+1 problem).
- Heavy computed fields recalculated on every screen load.
- Undersized or misconfigured servers: too few workers, too little memory.
- Scheduled jobs colliding with peak working hours.
- Huge tables with no archiving: years of logs, emails and attachments.
- Slow integrations that block users while waiting for external APIs.
- Reports running live on transactional tables instead of a reporting layer.
- Network and hosting distance between users and the server.
Measure before you change anything
Use database statistics, slow-query logs and application profilers to find the real bottlenecks. Guessing usually leads to expensive hardware upgrades that do not fix the root cause.
Quick wins vs structural fixes
| Quick wins | Structural fixes |
|---|---|
| Add indexes, tune workers and memory | Refactor inefficient custom modules |
| Reschedule heavy jobs to off-peak | Move integrations to background queues |
| Archive old logs and attachments | Add a reporting warehouse with Power BI |
